Surface Modification of Polymeric Materials and Application for \nAdhesion of Different Materials
Surface Modification, Adhesion of Different Materials, Surface modification of polymeric substrates was demonstrated by the polymer grafting to produce adhesion interface. Photoreactive 4-azidephenylcarbonylethyl 2-bromoisobtyrate (AzEBI) was synthesized by the reaction of 2-hydroxythyl 2-bromoisobutyrate and 4-azidebenzoyl chloride. The AzEBI was immobilized on the polymeric substrates by spin-coating process and UV irradiation. Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl)trimethyl ammonium chloride (MTAC) and 3-slufopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (SPMK) were carried out to form poly(MTAC) and poly(SPMK) brush layers, respectively, on AzEBI-immobilized polymeric substrates, such as polycarbonate (PC), poly(lactic acid) (PLA), Nylon6, ABS resin, and polypropylene (PP). Two polymeric substrates, one prepared with poly(MTAC) brush and one with poly(SPMK) brush, were jointed in a 1 cm2 contact area using 2 L of water under a pressure for 3 hours at room temperature and successive air dried. Two different polymeric substrates were successfully adhered to reveal 0.71 MPa of the lap shear adhesion strength. - 2014 - Present
